I have credited ScotchNoob for being my go-to resource when I was first getting in to whiskey. I found that this anonymous blogger had a similar palate to mine so when he recommended something I was almost sure I'd like it too. Having someone to be able to lean on when you're first starting out is great since it can be overwhelming when you go to a store and not know what you should try. Taste is extremely subjective so it may take a while before you find someone who has a similar palate as you, for me I lucked out right away.
Now, I'll admit, Nathan writes very well (almost poetic) about his tasting notes so his newer reviews sound like an expert level sommelier wrote them, but even with that, a beginner can still read it and know what to expect out of the whiskey he is reviewing.
Since I am such a fan I was nervous about interviewing him since we have never spoke before this recording but I was happy to hear how natural the conversation flowed.
I do apologize if there's background noise from trucks moving in the background at some points, I was recording outside of a Starbucks. We also we're disconnected for a brief moment but we pick up right where we left off.

VIP tickets are $150 and include early entry at 1 p.m. with exclusive additional whiskies being poured only that hour.
General Admission is $100 and allows admission from 2-5 p.m.

That's what everyone in my whiskey groups sound like right now.
Yes, these 2 whiskies are being discontinued...but there's no need to pay ridiculous amounts of money in the secondary market for these just because a few Facebook stories are being shared. If you never intended to buy a bottle, don't buy one just because of the news. There are plenty of whiskies to go around. Hibiki 12 was discontinued and we got Hibiki Harmony in it's place. Now 17 is going away and we'll get the Blender's Choice in September. If you find one at a retail price, then yes, go for it, but don't let scammers force you to pay more. Whiskey is to be enjoyed. It's to be appreciated. It's to be shared. It should not be used to try to flip to make a quick buck. That just ruins the experience. Enjoy the water of life, by yourself or with a friend. Cheers!

Today I had the pleasure to sit down with Chris McInerny while we enjoy a dram of Amrut Fusion. Amrut is a whisky from Indian and it happens to be a personal favorite of Chris.
Chris and his family are entrepreneurs from North County, San Diego, who own a couple of liquor stores and a Pizzeria. Bonsall Fine Wine and Spirits (76 and Mission, inside the Daniels Market shopping center) which is down the street from where I live. Stormy is the guy you'll normally see at that location.

Chris is a very knowledgable person within the world of whiskey and definitely has a passion to discuss the topic. Within the audio podcast Chris tells us how he was introduced to the industry and his feelings on the direction the whiskey world is going. He also gives us his tasting notes on Amrut Fusion. Supporting the local shops, bars and just exploring the world of whiskey to find what you enjoy.

In this episode I talk about my New York roots, which is where the term Brolic comes from. You'll hear about terms like Deadass as well as all the new words that will randomly come up in conversation without me noticing since it's just common words to me. I also tell you how I got into Scotch and whiskey after getting burned out from the San Diego craft beer scene. Where I leaned on one bloggers review site scotchnoob.com for recommendations for a new bottle to try. Which led me to realizing someone needs to make an entertaining and non-snobby whiskey review channel on Youtube. The Whiskey Vault, the Whiskey Tribe and all the Magnificent Bastards I've met along the way while finally taking the plunge from "one day, one day... to we're doing this!". I believe that one day this will be a giant community that spans not only coast to coast, but globally. Nerds of the world unite. Snobs can take a hike and follow another group.

In todays environment of secondary pricing and even liquor store owners price gouging, it's refreshing to find a store owner who prices their stuff fairly. Weller 12 has to be one of the most over-hyped and over-priced bourbons that exists right now. It's supposed to be in the $30-40 range but I've seen stores mark it up as high as $200! Thanks to Ray at Village Bonsall Market I was able to buy this bottle for just $40! (Bonsall is a small little town in North County, San Diego between Vista, Oceanside and Fallbrook.)
I could have been a prick and bought the other bottle he had just to re-sell it, but I don't want to support the price gouging market. I left the other bottle on the shelf so hopefully I gain some good whiskey karma. :)
Weller 12 is a wheated bourbon and some people will call it the poor man's Pappy. I won't leave a review for this one here, I'll save it for our Youtube channel. Bottom line is, Weller 12 for $40 is a hard to get Deadass Deal!

This 2 minute whiskey review is on a Jack Daniels look alike that will likely be getting a new look once they're sued by ole JD's lawyers.
So I was at Total Wine and More up in Temecula when I found this bottle for sale. It's just $14 for a full 750ml bottle and $26 for a 1.75! I was on my motorcycle and didn't have room in my backpack for a full size so I just picked up a mini to try. I definitely want to grab a full size before they're forced to change the look. Collectors item in the future?
So for such a bottom priced whiskey I am totally blown away...it's really not terrible. It's actually pretty descent. It's not something you'll be sipping neat to try to find subtle nuanced tasting notes but it's definitely a fine whiskey to drink on the rocks. Or just pick up a bottle to have a fun weekend with the boys. Skip out on the Jack and Coke and have yourself a Lonehand...while it's still on the shelves at least :)

This is a lesser known company who has only been around for a few years. I believe they're in their 4th year. They are based in Thurso, Highland, Scotland.

For a brand so young, I am amazed at how good this Wolfburn single malt tastes. I mention it in the podcast, but the rumors are that this is aged in used Laphroaig barrels which give it a slight hint of smoke.
Nose: Sour, slight smoke
Palate: Smooth :) Sweet, fruit?, kiss of smoke
It's priced higher than most people would expect such a young whisky to be priced, but based off this bottle, I can firmly say...age doesn't necessarily imply a superior tasting whisky. I've had plenty of 12 and 18 year old whisk(e)ys that can't hold a candle to this one. I for one, am looking forward to trying the other varieties of Wolfburn as they become available in my area. I've only seen this one in California so far. I'm also looking forward to seeing what this company will do with more experience and age under their belt. I recommend giving this one a try and don't be an age snob! This is still in my top 10.

When I first created this segment I was calling it Frugal Finds. I'm a frugal guy and love the hunt of finding a great deal which I why I felt that was an easy name, but Mike suggested I use another NY term I taught him and have a segment called Deadass Deals. He suggested this just a day after I uploaded this. So this is the one and only episode of Frugal Finds, as it's now known as Deadass Deals. I explain Deadass in another podcast episode.
This was an amazing find from Hi-Time Wine Cellars which is a liquor store in Costa Mesa, CA. They also have an online web store, which is where I purchased my bottle. www.hitimewine.net
This bottle typically sells for around $60 for Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Strength edition. It comes in at the legal limit proof so it's quite different from the regular Bulleit Bourbon. I had 4 other bottles in my shopping cart (all of which were GREAT prices too) and decided to add a bourbon to my order since I never had one. It wasn't until it arrived that I realized I didn't order the regular version...much to my surprise since I only paid $26! For anyone who is interested, this was batch #2.
*I also paid $44 for Laphroaig Quarter Cask, $50 for Johnnie Walker Green, Aberfeldy 12 for $34, and Compass Box Great King Street for $39. Each one of these could have been their own episode of Deadass Deals at those prices...especially the QC.

Here it is...my 2 minute review of my favorite whiskey thus far, Laphroaig 10 single malt scotch whisky from Islay. For the uninitiated, the Islay style of whisky is a love or hate kind of thing. The peat smoke brings up some really unique scents and flavors that you don't get from other types of whisk(e)y and for me it's a pure love. The smokey, barbecue and camp fire nose I get is like no other. There's no subtlety here on the palate either, it's a punch to the face...in a good way :).
As Mike so eloquently said after his first time trying this: "It's like I just took a bong rip of campfire!" haha. I lost it when he said that.
